Auckland Council

Auckland Council is the local government council for the Auckland (Māori: Tāmaki Makaurau) region in New Zealand. In 2019 Mayor Phil Goff announced a commitment to reduce corporate emissions by 20% though decarbonising the corporate fleet and shifting to sustainable energy across community facilities.

Rebecca lead a dynamic team in scoping the technology, systems, process and cultural changes needed to achieve a 50% reduction in corporate fleet emissions by 2025. A 5 year road map was designed and handed over to remove complexity and allow ‘business as usual’ processes to deliver with working group oversight monitoring progress.

What value was added?

  • Detailed scoping of the fleet decarbonisation programme, integrated projects to achieve a 50% corporate fleet reduction by 2025.

  • Disruption of the traditional feet business model to shifting the team towards delivering ‘workplace travel as a service’ rather than the narrow slice of fleet.

  • A recommended re-pivot of the programme was agreed to move from decarbonisation to optimisation, with new ways of working embedded using kaizen and agile methodologies.

  • Existing policies and procedures were refreshed, and a backlog of improvements identified to enhance the customer experience and streamline common process.

  • New KPIs were embedded to provide transparency of progress against carbon, cost and behaviour measures, reported via a new management dashboard.

  • In parallel mobilising as a high preforming team to respond to covid-19 and a fast changing business place with $200k+ OPEX savings secured for the FY20/21 Emergency Budget.
